Your First Foot Reflexology Session

The private worries people bring to a first foot massage, from ticklish soles to calluses, and why none of them are a reason to skip it.

Feet are the part of the body people are least willing to hand over to a stranger, which is a strange thing to admit about a limb everybody stands on all day. The hesitations are remarkably consistent, they are almost never about the technique, and they are all smaller than they feel in the car park.

Ticklishness is the big one. It stops more people from booking this than price does. The reassuring thing is that the sensation which makes you flinch comes from light, unpredictable contact, and reflexology is neither light nor unpredictable. It is slow, deep and deliberate, and the nervous system reads it completely differently. If you know you are ticklish, say it in the first thirty seconds. The therapist begins firmer and the problem disappears before it starts. If a moment does catch you wrong, laughing is not a crisis and nobody is offended.

Then there is the state of your feet. Calluses from boots. Rough heels in February. A nail that has not been to a salon since a wedding two summers ago. Cracked skin, bunions, a toe that points the wrong way. None of this registers as anything but a foot to somebody who works on them all day, and none of it will be commented on. Nobody here is inspecting your grooming, nothing is being assessed, and no product gets recommended at the end.

Smell is the worry people will not say aloud, so here it is in print. Feet that have been inside shoes since seven in the morning smell like feet that have been inside shoes since seven in the morning. This is the least surprising thing that will happen to your therapist today. Come straight from work if that is what the day allows.

You do not have to talk. Silence is the default setting in the room and it will not be interpreted as coldness. Nothing needs filling and nobody is waiting for conversation before beginning.

Falling asleep is common, snoring included, and it is treated as a compliment rather than an event. The end of the session is handled quietly and nobody makes a remark about it afterwards.

Bodywork experience is not required. This is an unusually good first appointment for exactly that reason, because there is nothing to decide in advance. You are not choosing between modalities or specifying a depth. You sit back and, if something is too firm or too soft, one sentence adjusts it.

There is also no correct experience to have. Some people feel a specific release under the arch and know the instant it happened. Others simply notice, somewhere in the second half, that they stopped rehearsing tomorrow's problems. Both are the treatment doing its job.

One honest caution before you book. Anything medical involving your feet, ankles or circulation belongs with a doctor first. The hour is designed to be restful, not clinical, and we will not pretend it is anything else.

On timing a first one, later in the day is easier than earlier. The desk here keeps taking clients until ten each night, Sunday included, and the last starts of the evening are the quietest hours in the building. A first appointment goes considerably better when there is nothing waiting behind it, and an eight o'clock booking is the simplest way to guarantee that.

Sixty minutes, $85, one closed door, one licensed therapist, and nothing about it that has to be practised beforehand.
